Cebu student has received US scholarship offers worth 55M pesos

Simone Gabrielle Balaba, a senior student at Science and Technology Education Center (STEC) High School in Lapu-Lapu City, Philippines, has accomplished an outstanding achievement in her academic journey. Despite the limited opportunities available to students like her, she has been offered scholarships totaling more than PHP 55 million ($1.1 million) from nine prestigious colleges and universities in the United States.

Balaba, who is not the typical STEM student achiever and is currently studying HUMSS, had always dreamed of studying abroad. After working hard on her college applications, she received admission offers from Augustana College, DePaul University, Fisher College, Hawaii Pacific University, Hollins University, Knox College, University of La Verne, Whitworth University, University of Akron, and Xavier University.

In addition to being accepted by these top-tier US schools, Balaba was offered a combined scholarship package worth $995,920.00 (or more than 55 million pesos), which will cover the cost of tuition and some other expenses that come with studying in the US.

Expressing her gratitude in a social media post, Balaba thanked her family, friends, and teachers who believed and encouraged her to pursue her U.S. college applications. She acknowledged that her success was due to the hard work and support of many people in her life, and she is truly humbled by the faith that these colleges have placed in her.

As Balaba prepares to embark on her next journey in the US, she is seeking support from generous groups and individuals who can help cover her expenses for books, travel, and other daily needs. Despite having received generous scholarships and financial aid packages, Balaba is aware of the financial realities that come with attending college, and there are still other expenses such as textbooks, room and board, and transportation that will require additional support.

Therefore, Balaba is actively seeking sponsors and benefactors who may be willing to help fund these necessary expenses. She believes that any support that she receives will be a tremendous help in allowing her to fully engage in her college experience and pursue her academic goals with focus and determination.
